"Most liquid water is in Earth's oceans. The oceans are salty, which means that their water cannot be used for drinking or watering plants. If humans drink salty water, they get dehydrated. This is because too much salt in the bloodstream sucks water out of the cells. The same happens in plants. Most crops will die if they are watered with seawater.
The oceans are constantly churning. In fact, ocean water moves in giant, continuous loops. Some of these loops stay on the surface. Some lift water from the depths of the ocean and carry it down again.
Some currents at the ocean surface are driven by wind. These currents get diverted when there is a landmass in their path. They become bent into great loops called gyres.
Warm water heats up the air above it. As a result, the patterns of ocean circulation affect the global climate. For example, changes in the winds that blow across the tropical Pacific Ocean can alter the pattern of warm water. There is a dramatic shift in this pattern that is called El Niño. El Niño events happen every two to seven years.During these events, some regions have more rainfall while others have droughts.
Other ocean currents move water like a vast conveyor belt. When these currents approach the Earth's poles, the water becomes cooler. This makes it denser, and so it sinks. And a deep current of cold water flows back toward the equator. The circulation is caused not only by water getting cooler or warmer but also by its getting more or less salty, since seawater is denser than freshwater."

"Although humans call this planet Earth, perhaps it should have been named Water. This unique substance, which supports life on Earth, covers more than two-thirds of the planet's surface. As far as is known, none of the other planets in the solar system supports life. And none of them has liquid water on its surface. Some scientists believe that if life exists anywhere, it must depend on water.
Life on Earth began in the sea. For most of geologic time, that is where it stayed. Life on land has to "carry the sea" with it, packed up as salty water inside living cells. That is why people are two-thirds water and why the typical person should ingest 1 quart (about 1 liter) of water each day. Much of this water is contained in the food a person eats. In any case, people must keep replacing the water in their bodies. Otherwise, they would soon dry out and die."

"SummerSummer in Vancouver is pleasantly warm. July and August temperatures typically reach 22º C, but can easily climb to near 30º C. Thanks to ocean breezes, it is usually a few degrees cooler by the water. These are ideal weather conditions for pursuing outdoor adventures such as hiking, mountain biking and golfing and walking."
